Well, well, well, it has finally happened, El Golfo is finally on the web, it is a little behind the curve with cyberspace but that is the el golfo way. You might ask what is the el golfo way? well it is a place where time has always been slow to show it’s effects. A little history of el golfo de Santa Clara is in order, it is a small fishing village on the Sea of Cortez in the state of Sonora, Mexico. It was first visited in the mid 1500 by the Indians of northern Mexico, southern, AZ and central AZ.

Now why did they come? To drink beer and ride their horses, not quite, but they did come to see the beach and play on the sand not unlike what we do to this day. From what I have read, mostly in the Ceta journal, the Indians would walk to el golfo and collect salt from the natural salt flat that is about 20 miles down the beach. They would camp at this site and eat scallops, clams and fish with spears, collect shells and leave their trash, not unlike some people do today. Just what would they do with the salt? Well if one does not have it in your diet they will die, and they used the shells to make jewelry and trinkets to trade with other tribes. If you go down the beach and find the salt flats and you look for a mizzens ie trash dumps you will find, pottery, arrowheads, old scallop shells and petrified turds.(please do not disturb the artifacts) The pottery shards do not have any markings on them because they were camping!! Do you bring your finest stuff when you go down the beach? I do not think so.

Now around 1800 the Yaqui indians set up camp and waited for Father Kino to show up and convert them to Christaniety, which he did and the village of El Golfo De Santa Clara was established. Now what do the locals do now? They fish for camerones from mid september thru febuary, then they wait for the corvina to come in and fish them till they leave around mid may.Hopefully they have made enought money to relax the rest of the time but we know better. They supplement these seasons with crab durring the hot months and mexican flounder whenever they can.

Now why do we come to El Golfo? Well let me see, the beach, the sand, the shells, the beer, the food, the people, the riding, the quiet, the ocean, the friendship, the stuck cars, the bogs, the wind, the beach golfing, the sunrise, the sunset, the full moon, the grounion runs, the swiming, you get the picture, you will just have to go and experiece it.
